What is NFC & how does it work ?

Near Field Communication

NFC, or Near Field Communication, is a wireless communication technology that allows devices to exchange data when they are in close proximity to each other, typically within a few centimeters. NFC operates at frequencies of 13.56 megahertz (MHz) and enables communication between devices such as smartphones, tablets, payment terminals, and NFC tags.

Here’s how NFC works:

  1. Initiation: One NFC-enabled device initiates communication by generating a radio frequency (RF) field. This device is typically referred to as the initiator or active device.
  2. Detection: Another NFC-enabled device, known as the target or passive device, detects the RF field generated by the initiator. Once detected, the target device activates and prepares for communication.
  3. Data Exchange: After the detection, the devices establish a communication link and exchange data. This data can include various types of information such as payment credentials, contact details, URLs, or commands.
  4. Termination: Once the data exchange is complete, the communication link is terminated, and the devices return to their idle state.

NFC technology supports two main modes of operation:

  • Peer-to-Peer Mode: In this mode, two NFC-enabled devices exchange data with each other. This mode is commonly used for tasks like file sharing, contact exchange, or multiplayer gaming.
  • Reader/Writer Mode: In this mode, an NFC-enabled device (the reader) reads information from or writes information to an NFC tag. NFC tags are small, passive devices that store data and can be embedded in various objects such as posters, stickers, or product packaging. Common applications of this mode include mobile payments, access control systems, and smart posters.

NFC technology offers several advantages, including convenience, security, and ease of use. It enables seamless interactions between devices without the need for complex setup procedures or physical connections. Additionally, NFC transactions are typically encrypted, providing a secure means of data exchange.
